吉英和伊丽莎白是情深意笃的一对姐妹，又是最知己的朋友，现在在这件极其奥妙的情事上，吉英一时难于开口，伊丽莎白出于对姐姐的体贴，想逗弄她说出真情，她们这一对话的基调仍然是温婉的。笔者以为这段译文中的划线部分的语气，较之原文都有些重了。这里提出了直译和意译的题目，凡能直译处则对峙直译是我所遵守的原则，而综观王科一先生和孙致礼先生的译文，他们根基上遵循的是意译的原则。两种翻译的原则各有所长，各有所短，不过就这儿的划线部分而言，他们的意译是与原文的语气有些背叛了。笔者以为直译能较好地再现原文的说话、情势和蔼概特性，固然如果译者措置得不好，或许会使译文显得不是那么活泼活泼。
凯瑟琳夫人是一个非常傲岸自大的女人，她依仗着本身的财产和职位，到处对人发号施令，作者对她是极尽了讽刺之能事的。作者的讽刺渗入在字里行间，即这类讽刺是通过词语的挑选和句式的组合安排表示出来的。在这儿我感觉，遵循原文的语序译来，仿佛是能较多表现出一些作者的讽刺口气。在词语的翻译上也是如此，“pollution”普通是指详细环境的净化，这儿将此词直译出来，即译出它的本义，较能表现原文的气势和口气。译为“玷辱”仿佛便失掉了原文在这儿的一个隐喻了。？
